This old workaround was added due to test failures with VKCTS but it turns out the tests were broken. Color writemask for E5B9G9R9 must be all RGB or none and some tests are testing various RGB channels which is illegal. See https://gitlab.khronos.org/Tracker/vk-gl-cts/-/issues/5821.
